Which Fill Weight Does Your Horse Need?

Fill weight is the single most important choice. It depends on your climate and whether your horse is clipped.

Rule of thumb: a clipped horse needs roughly one tier warmer than the same horse unclipped. Body-clipped below 20°F? Layer a waterproof turnout sheet under a 300g+ blanket rather than going heavier in one layer.

Choosing Your Blanket

A horse turnout blanket is a waterproof, insulated blanket worn outdoors in the pasture or paddock. Unlike a stable blanket it has a tough waterproof outer shell, typically 600D to 1680D ripstop, plus secure surcingles so it stays in place while the horse moves, rolls and grazes.

Most horses with a full winter coat and shelter cope without one. A waterproof turnout blanket matters for clipped horses, seniors, hard keepers, thin-coated breeds, horses without wind shelter, and any horse in sustained cold rain — wet plus wind strips far more body heat than dry cold.

Stand your horse squarely on level ground. Measure with a soft tape from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the centre of the tail. That measurement in inches is your blanket size — 72 inches means a size 72. Between sizes, size up.

Insulation. A turnout sheet is a waterproof shell with no fill, for rain and wind. A turnout blanket carries insulating fill measured in grams for genuine cold.

1200D is the denier count of the waterproof outer shell — how thick and abrasion-resistant the yarn is. A 1200D ripstop shell is significantly more tear-resistant than 600D. For tough turnout, 1200D is the recommended choice.
