Saddle Bag Buyer’s Guide — Types, Mounting & Capacity

Where the Bag Mounts Changes Everything

Saddle bags are named for where they attach, and each position suits a different job. Most trail riders end up running two — something small and reachable in the saddle, plus real capacity behind the cantle.

Type Mounts Best For Reach While Riding
Cantle Bag Behind the cantle, over the skirt Main capacity — lunch, layers, tools No, dismount to access
Pommel Bag Over the swell, in front of the rider Water bottles, camera, phone Yes
Horn Bag Hangs from the saddle horn Small essentials kept close Yes
Trail Pack Full rear pack across the cantle Overnight and pack trips No

Leather or Canvas?

Leather bags look right on a western rig, age beautifully and last decades with conditioning — but they are heavier and need care. Heavy canvas and nylon packs are lighter, cheaper, shrug off rain and clean up easily, which is why they dominate on long pack trips. Neither is wrong; it is a question of whether you are outfitting a show rig or a working trail horse.

Balance the load. Pack both sides to roughly equal weight and keep heavy items low and forward. An unbalanced saddle bag shifts the whole saddle over miles and can rub your horse raw.

Saddle Bag Questions Answered

What is the difference between a cantle bag and a pommel bag?

Position. A cantle bag sits behind the rider over the saddle skirt and carries the bulk of your gear. A pommel bag sits in front over the swell, where you can reach it without dismounting — ideal for water and a phone.

How much can a horse saddle bag carry?

Capacity varies by style, but the real limit is balance rather than volume. Keep both sides evenly weighted, put heavy items low and forward, and remember that anything you add sits on your horse’s back for the whole ride.

Will a saddle bag fit my saddle?

Most cantle and pommel bags use adjustable ties or straps that fit standard western saddles. Check the skirt length on your saddle against the bag’s mounting width, particularly if you ride a round-skirt barrel saddle rather than a full-skirt ranch saddle.

Are leather saddle bags waterproof?

Leather is water-resistant rather than waterproof, and needs conditioning to stay that way. For genuinely wet conditions or multi-day trips, a treated canvas or nylon pack sheds rain far better.

Can I use saddle bags on a treeless saddle?

Yes, but mount carefully. Treeless saddles have no rigid frame to spread the load, so weight sits more directly on the horse’s back. Keep loads lighter and balance both sides precisely.
