Best Horse Blankets for Winter 2026: How to Choose by Weight, Denier and Size

The best horse blanket is the one that matches your horse's coat and clip, how much shelter it has, and your coldest, wettest weather. Pick a waterproof, breathable turnout shell for a horse that lives outside, pick the fill weight (in grams) for warmth, pick the denier (600D or 1200D) for how tough the shell needs to be, and measure chest to tail for size. Hilason-brand turnout blankets are listed in 600D and 1200D ripstop polyester shells with medium and heavy fills (fill weight is listed on each product page), in horse sizes 66" to 84", from $87.99 to $128.99, plus a no-fill 1200D turnout sheet at $78.99 for wet, mild days. Winter blankets and neck covers ship free by ground in the lower 48 states and carry a limited 1-year workmanship warranty.
This guide explains how to choose. To compare Hilason winter styles side by side and build a bundle, see Hilason winter blankets. To browse every blanket, sheet and fly sheet, see Equine blankets.
Start here: which blanket for which horse
These are starting points based on general blanketing practice, not Hilason product ratings. Adjust for the individual horse.
| If your horse... | Start with | Hilason option (Oct 2026) | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gets cold rain and wind but the weather is mild (spring, fall) | Waterproof turnout sheet, no fill | 1200D turnout rain sheet, $78.99 (turnout sheets) | Fly sheet vs turnout sheet |
| Is unclipped, healthy, has shelter and hay, and nights are cool | Medium fill | 600D waterproof belly-wrap blanket, $87.99 (turnout blankets) | Weight guide |
| Faces hard freezes, or is clipped, older or thin | Heavy fill, 300g or more, with a secure belly wrap | 1200D belly-wrap blanket, $98.95 to $98.99 (check the fill weight on the listing) | Winter blankets |
| Lives out with little wind shelter, or is clipped in driving rain and wind | Heavy fill with a neck cover | 1200D blanket with neck cover, $128.99 | Neck covers |
| Is rough on blankets (rolls, herd turnout, fences) | The tougher 1200D shell | Any 1200D listing, from $78.99 (sheet) to $128.99 | Denier guide |
| Is a pony or miniature horse | A blanket sized to pony or mini, not a small horse size | Pony 50" to 64" and mini 36" to 50" blankets, from $64.99 | Sizing |
| Is stabled indoors | A quilted stable blanket (not waterproof) | 420D quilted stable blanket, $84.99 to $89.99 (stable blankets) | Types |
| Is sweaty after work | A cooler | Fleece and cotton exercise coolers, $44.99 to $49.95 (exercise blankets) | Types |
| Needs summer fly and sun protection | A mesh fly sheet | Poly/nylon mesh fly sheets, $47.96 to $49.95 (fly sheets) | Fly sheet vs turnout sheet |
Choose by your horse and your weather
Temperature is only one input. The same 30°F night is a different problem for different horses, so work through these questions before you pick a weight.
| Question | Leans lighter or no blanket | Leans heavier or adds a neck cover |
|---|---|---|
| Coat and clip | Thick, unclipped winter coat | Body-clipped or trace-clipped, or a thin coat; go one tier warmer |
| Age and condition | Healthy adult in good body condition on plenty of hay | Older, thin, hard keeper, or recovering from illness (ask your vet) |
| Shelter | Run-in shed or windbreak available | Open pasture with no wind or rain cover |
| Wet and wind | Dry, calm cold | Cold rain, sleet or wind: step up one weight, or use a sheet if it is mild but wet |
| Acclimation | Has lived in the cold for weeks | Recently moved from a warmer climate, or a sudden cold snap |
| Weather swings | Steady cold: one blanket | Swings of 20 degrees or more: a medium blanket plus a sheet for layering is more flexible than one heavy blanket |
| Turnout style | Quiet, alone in a paddock: 600D can be enough | Herd turnout, rolling, fences, rough play: 1200D shell |
Most owners in a four-season climate end up with three layers: a waterproof turnout sheet for wet, mild weather, a medium-weight turnout blanket for ordinary winter, and a heavyweight blanket for the coldest stretches, plus a fly sheet for summer.
The rule that beats every chart: shivering or a tucked-up posture means add weight, and damp or sweaty hair under the blanket means take weight off.
Fill weight and temperature
Fill weight, in grams, is what makes a blanket warm. The temperature bands below are a general rule of thumb for a horse that needs a blanket, not a Hilason rating.
Many healthy, unclipped horses with shelter and hay need no blanket at 30°F, and a clipped horse should move up one tier.
| Fill | General use | Hilason option |
|---|---|---|
| 0g (sheet) | About 55°F and above; rain and wind only | 1200D turnout sheet, $78.99 |
| About 100g | About 50°F; fall and spring | See the lineup below and each product page for fill weights |
| 200g to 250g | About 30°F to 40°F; medium weight | 600D belly-wrap blanket, $87.99 |
| 300g or more | Below 30°F; heavy, dense fill | 1200D belly-wrap blanket, $98.95 to $98.99; with neck cover, $128.99 |
A heavy blanket in a mild stretch can overheat a horse, so check under the blanket each day. Read the full horse blanket weight guide and compare styles on the winter blankets page.
600D vs 1200D: choosing the shell
Denier (the D) measures how thick the threads of the outer shell are. A higher number means a tougher shell that resists tears and abrasion from rolling, fences and herd mates. Denier does not tell you how warm a blanket is, because warmth comes from fill, and it does not by itself tell you how waterproof the blanket is, because waterproofing depends on the coating and the seams.
Compare deniers only within the same kind of fabric.
| 600D | 1200D | |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Lighter, ripstop polyester | Heavier, ripstop polyester; tougher for hard-use turnout and rough pastures |
| Best for | Lighter use and milder winters; horses that turn out quietly | Horses that roll, play hard, or turn out in a herd or near fences |
| Hilason horse-size price | $87.99 (belly wrap) | $98.95 to $98.99 (belly wrap); $128.99 with neck cover; $78.99 as a no-fill sheet |
| Affects warmth? | No. Warmth is set by fill weight. | |
Hilason does not currently list 1680D blankets; 1680D is a heavier tier some other brands offer for horses that destroy blankets. Read the full denier guide.

Common features across the turnout listings: waterproof, breathable ripstop polyester shell, Persian twisted woven taffeta lining, poly fill, fleece at the withers, shoulder gussets, a double-buckle front closure, a belly wrap, and double-stitched, taped, reinforced seams.
Many styles add removable elastic leg straps, an insulated tail flap and D-rings for a hood or neck cover.
Features vary by listing. All items in this table are Hilason-brand; other brands we sell are not included. Browse everything in Equine blankets.
Turnout blanket, sheet, stable blanket, cooler or fly sheet
| Type | Use | Waterproof? | Insulated? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter turnout blanket | Outdoors in cold, wet or windy weather | Yes, waterproof and breathable ripstop shell | Yes, fill weight is shown on each product page |
| Turnout sheet | Outdoors in rain and wind when it is mild, or as a waterproof layer | Yes | No fill |
| Stable blanket | Indoors, dry environment, or as a layer under a turnout in hard cold | No, quilted shell | Yes, 300g on Hilason listings |
| Cooler | After exercise or a bath, to wick moisture while the horse dries | No | No (fleece or cotton) |
| Fly sheet | Warm months: insect and UV protection | No, open mesh lets water through | No |
If your horse is turned out in wet weather, use a waterproof turnout, not a stable blanket. A cooler is not a replacement for a winter blanket. Compare sheets in the turnout sheet vs turnout blanket guide and see the fly sheet comparison in fly sheet vs turnout sheet.
Do you need a neck cover?
A neck cover closes the gap between the blanket and the head. It matters most for clipped horses, older horses, exposed paddocks with little wind shelter, and wind-driven rain with sub-freezing temperatures. A healthy horse with a full coat and a run-in shed is often fine without one.
On Hilason listings you can buy a 1200D blanket with the neck cover included ($128.99), choose a belly-wrap blanket whose D-rings let you add a hood later, or buy a neck cover or hood on its own. A medium neck cover fits blanket sizes 66" to 76" and a large fits 78" to 84".
See winter blankets for matching neck covers and neck wraps and hoods.
How to size a horse blanket
- Stand your horse square on level ground, with a helper holding him still.
- Use a soft tape (not a metal one). Start at the center of the chest, where the neck meets the body.
- Follow the side of the body across the widest part of the shoulder and barrel, keeping the tape level and not pulling it tight.
- End at the center of the tail. The number of inches is your measurement.
- Convert it to the size to order with the table on the winter blankets page.
Hilason horse-size blankets are listed from 66" to 84" in 3-inch steps, with extra sizes on some 1200D styles. Pony blankets run 50" to 64" and miniature horse blankets 36" to 50".
We do not list sizes above 84", so measure before ordering a draft or very large horse. Sizes are not identical between brands, so use the brand's own chart.
The horse blanket size chart and measuring guide has a printable chart.
Fit check and common problems
Once the blanket is on, check these points before you leave your horse in it:
- Shoulders: you can slide a flat hand between the blanket and the shoulder, and the horse moves freely. Pinching means size up or choose a gusseted style.
- Withers: the blanket sits smoothly without pressing down. A fleece-lined wither helps, but it does not fix a blanket that is too small.
- Tail flap: it covers the dock without pulling.
- Belly wrap and surcingles: snug enough not to catch a hoof, loose enough to slide a hand through.
- Walk test: walk a few steps and watch for shifting, bunching or the blanket pulling to one side.
Rubs at the shoulder or withers usually mean the size or the cut is wrong, not that the blanket is faulty.
Slipping or spinning means the belly wrap and leg straps need adjusting, or the blanket is too big.
Sweat or damp hair underneath means too much blanket for the day: take it off or drop a weight.
Soaking through means the coating is worn: re-proof it or replace the blanket.
Daily checks, care and re-proofing
Check under the blanket every day for rubs, sweat, damp hair, torn straps or a blanket that has shifted. Take it off to groom and to check body condition. Do not put a blanket on a soaking-wet horse; dry the horse first.
Change the weight when the forecast changes.
Waterproofing wears down with use and washing.
Brush off dirt and hair regularly, wash with a residue-free cleaner made for horse blankets rather than ordinary laundry detergent, air dry fully (avoid high heat, which can damage the waterproof coating), and apply a re-proofing spray each season. Check seams and hardware at the same time. In freezing weather, clear ice and snow from buckles and snaps before you open them, and thaw frozen straps instead of forcing them. Gradual loss of waterproofing is normal wear and is not covered by the warranty.

Horse blanket FAQ
What is the best horse blanket?
The best horse blanket is the one that fits your horse and your weather: a waterproof, breathable shell if your horse lives outside, enough fill (in grams) for your coldest nights and your horse's coat and clip, a shell tough enough for how your horse treats a blanket, and the right size. There is no single best blanket for every horse. Hilason-brand turnout blankets are listed from $87.99 to $128.99 in 600D and 1200D ripstop shells, with a no-fill 1200D turnout sheet at $78.99.
What weight horse blanket does my horse need?
It depends on coat, clip, age, body condition, shelter and wind, not temperature alone. As a general rule of thumb, no fill suits rain and wind at 55°F and above, 200g to 250g suits roughly 30°F to 40°F, and 300g or more suits below 30°F. A clipped horse usually needs one tier warmer. Many healthy, unclipped horses with shelter and hay need no blanket at 30°F. Check under the blanket daily: shivering means add weight, damp hair means take weight off.
What is the difference between a turnout blanket and a stable blanket?
A turnout blanket is built for outdoors: a waterproof, breathable outer shell with shoulder gussets and secure straps for rolling and running. A stable blanket is quilted for the barn and is not waterproof, so it soaks through in rain or wet snow and should not be used for turnout. A turnout blanket can also be used in the stall, and a stable blanket can be layered under a turnout in very cold weather.
What is the difference between 600D and 1200D horse blankets?
Denier (the D) measures how thick the threads in the outer shell are, so it tells you about tear and abrasion resistance. 1200D is the tougher shell for hard-use turnout and rough pastures, and 600D suits lighter use and milder winters at a lower price. Denier does not measure warmth, which comes from fill weight, and it does not by itself measure waterproofing. On Hilason listings, 600D horse-size blankets are $87.99 and 1200D belly-wrap blankets are $98.95 to $98.99.
Does Hilason sell 1680D blankets?
No. Hilason's current blanket listings are 600D and 1200D shells (the stable blanket is 420D). 1680D is a heavier shell tier that some other brands offer for horses that are very hard on blankets. If your horse destroys blankets, start with a 1200D shell and check the fit before looking at fill.
How do I measure my horse for a blanket?
Stand your horse square on level ground. With a soft tape, start at the center of the chest, follow the side of the body across the widest part of the shoulder and barrel, and finish at the center of the tail. The number of inches is the measurement you convert to a blanket size. Hilason's winter blankets page has a table that converts your measurement to the size to order, and the horse blanket size chart guide covers the full fit check.
What sizes do Hilason horse blankets come in?
Horse-size blankets are listed from 66" to 84" in 3-inch steps (66", 69", 72", 75", 78", 81" and 84"); some 1200D styles also list sizes such as 68", 70", 74", 76", 80" and 82", so check the listing. Pony blankets are listed from 50" to 64" and miniature horse blankets from 36" to 50". Horses that measure over 84" need a size we do not currently list, so measure before ordering.
Do I need a neck cover?
A neck cover closes the gap between the blanket and the head, which matters most for clipped horses, older horses, exposed paddocks, and wind-driven rain with sub-freezing temperatures. A healthy horse with a full coat and a run-in shed is often fine without one. Hilason lists 1200D blankets with a neck cover included at $128.99, and many 1200D belly-wrap blankets have D-rings so a hood can be added. A medium neck cover fits blanket sizes 66" to 76" and a large fits 78" to 84".
When should I use a turnout sheet instead of a blanket?
Use a waterproof turnout sheet for cold rain and wind when the temperature is mild, such as spring and fall, because it has no fill and will not overheat a horse with a healthy coat. It also works as a waterproof layer over a stable blanket. Step up to a filled blanket when it will stay well below freezing. Hilason's turnout sheet is a 1200D ripstop shell with no fill, at $78.99.
Are Hilason horse blankets waterproof?
Hilason lists its 600D and 1200D turnout blanket shells as waterproof and breathable ripstop polyester with double-stitched, taped seams. Like any waterproof blanket, the coating wears with use and washing, so re-proof with a spray treatment each season.
What warranty and return policy do Hilason blankets have?
Hilason winter horse blankets carry a limited 1-year workmanship warranty against manufacturing defects in stitching, seams, buckles and hardware under normal use; it does not cover damage caused by the horse, misuse, improper fit, normal wear or wear of the waterproof coating. Winter blankets and neck covers can be returned for fit or a manufacturing fault within 30 days of delivery if they are unused and in the original packaging, with no restocking fee, and a blanket that has been put on a horse or washed cannot be returned. Fly sheets are final sale. Full terms are on the winter blankets page, the Returns and Exchanges policy and the Blankets and Flysheets Disclaimer.
Do Hilason horse blankets ship free?
Blankets and neck covers ship free by ground in the lower 48 states. Delivery is typically 3 to 5 business days from the day you order, handling included.
How does the bundle discount work?
It is automatic: add 2 items for 5% off, 3 for 7%, 4 or more for 10%. Blankets and neck covers ship free by ground in the lower 48, typically 3–5 business days. Mix any sizes and colors. The discount shows at checkout, no code needed. See the winter blankets page for bundle details.
Can I leave a blanket on my horse all winter?
Not without checking. Look under the blanket every day for rubs, sweat or damp hair, and take it off and re-fit it if you find any. If the weather swings by 20 degrees in a week, a medium blanket plus a sheet for layering is more flexible than one heavy blanket. Take the blanket off to groom and to check weight and body condition regularly.
