Horse blanket sizes are measured in inches from the center of the chest to the center of the tail. If your measurement falls between two sizes, always round up to the next even size. A blanket that is slightly too large can be adjusted with the front buckles; a blanket that is too small will rub and restrict movement.

How to Measure Your Horse for a Blanket (Step-by-Step)

Get the right tools. Use a soft fabric measuring tape (not a metal construction tape). A 120-inch sewing tape works best.
Stand your horse square. Position your horse on level ground with all four feet evenly placed. Have a helper hold the horse steady.
Find your starting point: center of chest. Place the end of the tape at the center of your horse's chest, right where the neck meets the body.
Run the tape along the body. Follow the widest part of the shoulder, across the barrel, keeping the tape parallel to the ground. Do NOT pull the tape tight -- let it follow the natural curve.
End at center of tail. Stop at the center point of the tail dock (where the tail meets the body).
Read the measurement in inches. This is your blanket size. For example, 78 inches = size 78.
Round up if between sizes. If you measure 77 inches, go with a size 78 -- never size down.

Fit Check: Is Your Horse's Blanket the Right Size?

Shoulder clearance: You should be able to slide your flat hand between the blanket and the horse's shoulder. If it is tight or pinching, size up.
Withers: The blanket should sit smoothly over the withers without pressing down. Look for a shadow gap -- light visible under the front of the blanket means it sits correctly.
Tail flap: The tail flap should cover the dock without pulling. If the blanket ends before the tail, it is too short. If it hangs past the tail by more than 2 inches, size down.
Belly straps: Cross surcingles should hang 6-8 inches below the belly when fastened -- snug enough to not catch a hoof, loose enough to slide a hand through.
Walking test: Walk your horse a few steps in the blanket. Watch for shifting, bunching at the shoulders, or the blanket pulling to one side.
