Best Western Saddles in 2026: Which Type Fits Your Riding?

By Hilason Media Team. Updated .

Quick answer: The best western saddle is the one that fits your horse's back first and your riding second. For trail and all-around riding, a flex tree saddle suits most horses and riders. For barrel racing, choose a flex tree, a traditional tree or a lightweight treeless saddle with a deep seat and a 14" or 15" seat for most adults. Treeless saddles suit horses that are hard to fit with a tree, and synthetic saddles suit riders who want less weight and easier care.

Hilason saddles are designed in Rosenberg, Texas. Built in India. Hilason leather saddles use full grain cowhide leather sourced from the Americas. Most Hilason saddles are priced at $749.95 (prices as of October 25, 2026). Unused saddles can be returned within 30 days with no restocking fee, and Hilason is rated 4.8/5 across more than 1,700 customer reviews.

How to choose a western saddle in 5 steps

  1. Start with your horse's back. With a rider up, the gullet should clear the withers by about two fingers, the bars or panels should touch evenly from front to back with no bridging, and the saddle should sit level. Hilason flex tree and treeless saddles are listed to fit horses with a 6" to 8" gullet. If your horse is very high-withered, very flat or very wide, send us your measurements before ordering.
  2. Pick your seat size. Seat size is measured from the back of the swell to the top of the cantle and is chosen for the rider. See the seat size and fit quick guide below. If you are between sizes, ask us before you order.
  3. Match the saddle to how you ride. Trail and pleasure riders, barrel racers, ropers and gaited-horse riders each have a saddle shape built for them. Use the table at the top of this page, or read the trail guide or barrel racing guide.
  4. Choose a tree type. Flex tree, traditional tree and treeless saddles fit and feel different. The next section explains each, and the treeless vs flex tree vs traditional tree guide compares them in more depth.
  5. Set your budget and check the terms. Most Hilason saddles are $749.95, and unused saddles can be returned within 30 days with no restocking fee. If you are unsure about seat size or horse fit, email sales@hilason.com or call (713) 972-0404 before ordering and we will help.

Tree types explained

  • Traditional tree: a fixed tree made of fiberglass reinforced with wood at pressure points. It gives a stable platform when it fits the horse's back, and it fits fewer back shapes than a flex tree.
  • Flex tree: the bars are made of a proprietary rubber-like material that gives 4-way flex, and the pommel and cantle are fiberglass. The bars give as your horse moves and bends, which suits horses whose backs change through the season and riders who also trail ride.
  • Treeless: there are no traditional bars connecting the pommel and the cantle, and the pommel and cantle are fiberglass. It is the lightest option with the closest contact, it needs a spine-clearing pad and careful cinching, and it suits horses that are hard to fit with a tree. Hilason's treeless line includes Gen XII and Gen XIII saddles; the Gen XIII has small design improvements to the shape, skirt and jockey, and the difference is mostly cosmetic.
  • Synthetic: a build material rather than a tree type. Synthetic saddles such as the Hilason Cordura flex tree trail saddle have no leather to oil or condition. See the synthetic vs leather saddle guide.

Seat size and fit quick guide

  • Seat size: adult Hilason saddles are listed in seat sizes from 14" to 18". Barrel saddles have a deep pocket and feel smaller than a trail saddle of the same size, so many adult barrel racers ride a 14" or 15" seat, and taller or heavier riders often need a 15" or 16".
  • Trail rule of thumb: under 130 lb, a 14" to 15" seat; 130 to 175 lb, 15" to 16"; 175 to 200 lb, 16" to 17"; over 200 lb, 17" to 18". Leg length matters too, so sit in the saddle where you can.
  • Gullet: Hilason flex tree and treeless saddles are listed to fit horses with a 6" to 8" gullet. Check the gullet on each product page.
  • Fit check: two fingers of withers clearance with a rider up, even bar or panel contact with no bridging, a level saddle, and an even sweat pattern after a ride.

Barrel racing and barrel trail

Lightweight treeless saddles for barrel racing

Lightweight, split-fender treeless saddles are a favorite among barrel racers. A treeless saddle has no traditional bars between the pommel and cantle, and its pommel and cantle are fiberglass. Use one with a spine-clearing pad. The HSTW101 and HSTW105 models are among our most popular treeless saddles and are also offered in other colors; stock varies by listing, so check each product page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best western saddle for a beginner?

A flex tree saddle is a sensible starting point for most beginners, because the flex tree gives with the horse's back and suits a range of back shapes. Pick a seat size that lets you sit centered, check that the saddle fits your horse's back, and use a well-fitted pad. If you are unsure about seat size or horse fit, contact us before ordering and we will help.

What is the best western saddle for trail riding?

For trail riding, start with fit for your horse's back, then seat comfort and weight. A flex tree saddle is a good choice for most trail horses, and a gaited flex tree saddle suits many gaited horses. Hilason flex tree trail saddles are listed to fit horses with a 6 to 8 inch gullet, in leather or Cordura synthetic, in seat sizes from 14 to 18 inches.

What is the best western saddle for barrel racing?

For barrel racing, choose a flex tree or a traditional tree saddle with a deep seat, a tall cantle and a seat size of 14 or 15 inches for most adult riders. Taller or heavier riders often need a 15 or 16 inch seat. Lightweight, split-fender treeless saddles are also a favorite among barrel racers and suit horses that are hard to fit; use one with a spine-clearing pad.

What is the difference between a flex tree, treeless and traditional tree saddle?

A traditional tree saddle has a fixed tree made of fiberglass reinforced with wood at pressure points. A flex tree saddle has bars made of a rubber-like material that gives 4-way flex, with a fiberglass pommel and cantle. A treeless saddle has no traditional bars between the pommel and cantle, and its pommel and cantle are fiberglass.

How do I know what size western saddle I need?

Seat size is measured from the back of the swell to the top of the cantle, and you choose it for the rider. As a rule of thumb for trail riding, riders under 130 pounds fit a 14 to 15 inch seat, 130 to 175 pounds a 15 to 16 inch seat, 175 to 200 pounds a 16 to 17 inch seat, and over 200 pounds a 17 to 18 inch seat. Barrel seats run smaller.

How do I know if a western saddle fits my horse?

With a rider up, the gullet should clear the withers by about two fingers, the bars or panels should touch evenly from front to back with no bridging, and the saddle should sit level. After a ride, look for an even sweat pattern with no dry spots. Hilason flex tree and treeless saddles are listed to fit horses with a 6 to 8 inch gullet.

How much does a western saddle cost?

Most Hilason saddles are priced at exactly $749.95, which is about three in four of the in-stock saddle listings checked on October 25, 2026. By type, in-stock adult and youth western saddles ranged from $395.95 to $899.95, and Cordura synthetic saddles were $474.95 to $499.95. Prices change, so the product page always shows the current price.

Are synthetic western saddles any good?

Synthetic saddles are a practical choice for riders who want less weight and easier care, because there is no leather to oil or condition. The Hilason Cordura synthetic flex tree trail saddle is listed to fit horses with a 6 to 8 inch gullet. Leather saddles have a different look and feel, so choose the material that suits how you ride and care for tack.

Where are Hilason saddles made?

Hilason saddles are designed in Rosenberg, Texas. Built in India. Hilason started in 1995 and became part of Saddlery Inc., a US-based company in Rosenberg, Texas, in 2004. Hilason ships roughly 50,000 orders a year.

What leather are Hilason saddles made of?

Hilason leather saddles use full grain cowhide leather sourced from the Americas. Some Hilason saddles are synthetic instead, such as the Cordura synthetic flex tree trail saddle, which uses no leather. Each product page shows whether a saddle is leather or synthetic, along with its seat sizes and listed gullet fit.

Can I return a Hilason saddle?

Yes. Hilason saddles can be returned within 30 days with no restocking fee, as long as the saddle is unused. Contact us first to get a Return Authorization. The customer pays return shipping unless the saddle is faulty. Our returns and exchanges page has the full terms.
