What sets our flex tree apart

4-way flex movement

Our flex tree is built for 4-way flex movement, so the saddle can move with your horse's back instead of sitting rigid on it.

Barrel saddles that ride trail too

Every Hilason barrel racing flex tree saddle can also be used for trail and pleasure riding, so one saddle covers more of what you do.

Many styles in stock

Pick from a wide range of colors, finishes and tooling, plus a lower-priced Cordura line. We sold 203 flex tree saddles on hilason.com in the 12 months to October 2026 (Shopify orders, net of returns).

7 reasons riders choose a Hilason flex tree

Each reason says what it rests on. Rider comments are quotes from reviews on our own product pages or our paraphrases of Amazon reviews, with the month and year; they are individual experiences.

1

A flexible tree, and riders who report using it on different horses

A flex tree is designed to flex with the horse's back instead of staying fixed, which saddle-fit educators say can widen the range of horses a saddle suits. One Hilason owner reports using the same saddle on a small paint, a large draft and a gaited gelding (Nov 2024). A flex tree does not replace fit: talk to us about your horse before you order.

Basis: saddle-fit educator Julie Goodnight (undated); an Amazon review of a Hilason flex tree barrel/trail saddle.
2

Comfort is what riders mention most

Comfort is the top theme in the Amazon reviews we read, on every listing. Riders describe a deep, supportive seat and a rough-out seat and fenders that grip. Some riders also find the horn tall, the twist wide or the cantle high.

Basis: Amazon "Customers say" summaries and reviews, read 16 Oct 2026 (Amazon's summaries are AI-generated from reviews).
3

Listed at about 24 to 28 lb

Our barrel and trail listings state about 24 to 28 lb, depending on the saddle. A Circle Y flex tree trail saddle we checked lists 29 lb, and retail guides put western trail saddles at 25 to 35 lb. Check the weight on the product page for your saddle.

Basis: Hilason listings (weight varies by listing); a Circle Y listing and guides at sstack.com, seen 16 Oct 2026.
4

$749.95 in most styles

One Circle Y Topeka Flex2 trail saddle at Saddlery Stack lists at $2,699. It is a different maker, leather and construction, so this is price context, not a like-for-like test.

Basis: Hilason product pages; sstack.com listing, seen 16 Oct 2026.
5

Ships from stock

Saddles ship from stock, typically within 1 business day per our product pages, with matching front and rear cinch straps and adjustable stirrups listed as included. Only sizes in stock can be chosen on this page.

Basis: Hilason product pages and listings; stock changes daily.
6

A fair fit return and real help choosing

Return or exchange within 30 days for fit or a manufacturing fault, with no restocking fee, if the saddle is unused (a brief indoor fit check on a clean pad is fine); a manufacturing fault found within the 30 days is honored even after riding. Return shipping is paid by the customer except on items that arrived faulty. Call or email before you order; we reply within 1 business day.

Basis: Hilason Returns and Exchanges Policy.
7

Full grain American cowhide leather, hand tooled and carved

Listings describe full grain American cowhide leather skirting in smooth, antique, oiled and roughout finishes, with hand tooled and carved designs on the tooled styles. Reviewers mention appearance and quality; one buyer found the leather stiffer than expected. Reviewers ride gaited Tennessee Walkers, a Haflinger, an Icelandic, a draft, paints and quarter horses, and 203 flex tree saddles net of returns were sold on hilason.com between Oct 2025 and Oct 2026.

Basis: Hilason listings; Amazon reviews; Shopify orders.
Know before you buy
  • Flex trees suit feel-based riding such as trail; they are not recommended for heavy-duty ranch work or steer roping (Natural Horse World).
  • A flex tree does not replace fit. Seat size, saddle length against your horse's back, withers and other points all matter; a qualified saddle fitter can assess your horse.
  • The listing says the tree fits 6 to 8 inch gullets. We do not publish measured tree widths or a rider weight limit; call us for guidance on a specific saddle.
  • Some riders find the horn tall, the twist wide or the cantle high; a 5'9" rider needed longer fenders; a short-backed horse can find an 18" seat too long.

What riders say

Some of our favorite customer reviews, taken from our own product pages (Judge.me, read 22 Oct 2026). Quotes are shortened with "..." where marked and otherwise unedited, including spelling.

These are individual experiences, not typical results, and not a guarantee of fit for your horse. Amazon's summary for one listing says customers find it beautiful and comfortable. The same reviews appear on a saddle's size and color options, so we do not add listings together.

Prices and specs are what each seller listed when we looked on 22 Oct 2026: Horse Saddle Shop (Circle Y, Dakota), Tough-1, Farm and Ranch Depot, and retailer listings for Circle Y weights. Makers differ in tree, leather, finish, included items and brand history, so compare the specs that matter to you; Circle Y is a respected maker and this is price and terms context, not a claim that the saddles are identical. Prices change. Circle Y, Tough-1, Royal King, Double T and Dakota are trademarks of their owners; we are not affiliated with them.

Narrow your options

Optional. These questions only filter the styles and sizes shown in the shop; they do not decide whether a saddle fits your horse. You can skip them and browse everything.

1. What will you ride most?

2. Do you ride a western saddle now that fits you well?

3. Anything about the horse we should know?

Seat size is measured from the base of the horn to the top of the cantle (Saddlery Stack saddle-fitting guide, seen 16 Oct 2026). Seat size and horse fit are separate questions, and a qualified saddle fitter can assess your horse. Call or email us before you order and we will help you choose.

Questions

What does 4-way flex movement mean?

Our flex tree is built so the saddle can flex with your horse's back instead of staying rigid, and we call that 4-way flex movement. We do not publish lab measurements of the flex, and one customer review says it flexes less than they expected, so contact us if flex matters a lot to you and we will tell you what we know.

Can I use a barrel racing saddle for trail and pleasure riding?

Yes. Every Hilason barrel racing flex tree saddle can also be used for trail and pleasure riding. Choose the "Trail & pleasure" filter in the shop to see every style, barrel and trail, in one list.

How do I choose a seat size?

Seat size fits the rider and is measured from the base of the horn to the top of the cantle. If you ride a western saddle now that fits you well, its seat size is the best starting point. We do not give a height or weight chart for our saddles; call or email us if you are not sure and we will help you choose.

Will it fit my horse?

That depends on your horse. The listings say the flex tree fits horses with a 6 to 8 inch gullet, which is a broad range, and we do not publish measured tree widths. Wither clearance is one part of fit; a qualified saddle fitter can assess the whole saddle on your horse. Tell us about your horse and we will help you decide before you order.

My horse is short-backed. What should I know?

The listed skirt length is 26 inches. One reviewer sold an 18" saddle that was too long for a short-backed horse. Talk to us before choosing a larger seat.

What is your return policy for saddles?

You can return or exchange a flex tree saddle for fit or a manufacturing fault if the return is postmarked within 30 days of receiving it and the saddle is unused. A brief indoor fit check on a clean saddle pad is fine; a saddle that has been ridden, or shows sweat, hair, scuffs, wear or damage, cannot be returned for fit. A manufacturing fault found within 30 days of receiving the saddle is honored for return or exchange, even if the saddle has been ridden: contact us with photos. A fault found after 30 days is outside the return period. No restocking fee. Contact us first for a Return Authorization at sales@hilason.com or (713) 972-0404 / 1-888-HILASON. Original shipping is not refunded; return shipping is paid by the customer, except on items that arrived faulty; for exchanges the customer pays shipping both ways. Full terms are in our Returns and Exchanges Policy.

How does the rig discount work?

Add a saddle to your order, then add three add-ons from the list (we suggest one set, one pad and one cinch). Each group of three add-ons per saddle is 10% off; if you add more than three per saddle, the three lowest-priced get the discount. One or two add-ons alone do not get it. The final discount is calculated by Shopify in your cart, and any estimate on this page is only an estimate.

What comes with the saddle?

Per our listings: matching front and rear cinch straps and adjustable stirrups (leather-covered or anti-slip, depending on the saddle). A cinch, pad and headstall are separate, which is why the rig add-ons are here.

Shipping?

Free shipping to the lower 48 states on these saddles, with a tracking number, at an estimated 5 to 8 days at checkout. Final delivery estimates are confirmed at checkout.

How do I break in a new saddle?

We do not have a Hilason-specific break-in guide, and there is no fixed timeline from a reputable saddle source; time in the saddle is the usual advice. Please contact us and we will share what we know for your saddle.

Not sure about size or fit? Ask us.

Call (713) 972-0404 or 1-888-HILASON, or email sales@hilason.com. We reply within 1 business day.
