Breast Collars for Horses: Types, Fit and What to Check
Updated October 22, 2026 by the Hilason Media Team.
Quick answer: A breast collar keeps a western saddle from sliding back on climbs, steep trails and fast work. It runs across the horse's chest and clips to the saddle's front D-rings. Fit it so it sits above the point of the shoulder without pressing on the windpipe. Hilason breast collars run $22.95 to $248.99 (October 2026).

Shape: straight, V or U
- Straight / curved western collars are the most common and work for most trail and ranch riding.
- V-shaped and U-shaped collars change how the collar sits on the chest. Hilason lists both (V-shaped and U-shaped, $64.95). Choose the one that sits clear of your horse's shoulders and windpipe.
How a breast collar should fit
- Height: the collar should sit above the point of the shoulder, not low across the shoulder joint, and not high against the windpipe.
- Snugness: you should be able to fit a flat hand between the collar and the chest. Too tight restricts the shoulders; too loose lets the saddle slide back anyway.
- Center strap: run it to the cinch with a little slack so it does not pull the collar down.
- Even sides: adjust both tugs to the same length so the center ring sits in the middle of the chest.
- Check after a few minutes of riding and on a climb. Look for rubbing on the chest and behind the shoulders after the ride.
If the collar tends to drop, a wither strap can help hold it up.
Who it's for / not for
For: trail riders on hills, ranch and roping riders, barrel and speed-event riders, and anyone whose saddle tends to slide back.
Not for:
- Fixing a saddle that does not fit. A breast collar steadies a saddle; it does not correct a poor tree fit (see our saddle type guide).
- Ponies or very small horses, unless the listing gives a size that fits: many of these collars are listed in horse (full) size.
- Holding a saddle that slips sideways. That is usually a cinch or saddle fit issue.
FAQ
What does a breast collar do on a horse?
It keeps the saddle from sliding back, especially on climbs and during fast work. It attaches to the saddle's front D-rings and usually to the cinch with a center strap.
How should a breast collar fit?
Above the point of the shoulder, clear of the windpipe, with about a flat hand of room between the collar and the chest.
Do I need a breast collar for trail riding?
On hilly or steep trails, many riders use one to keep the saddle in place. On flat, easy rides with a well-fitted saddle, it is optional.
Leather or neoprene breast collar?
Leather is durable and traditional and needs leather care. Neoprene and coated webbing are easier to clean and handle wet conditions well. Choose by how and where you ride.
What is the difference between a breast collar and a breastplate?
They do the same job. "Breast collar" is the usual western term; "breastplate" is common in English and endurance tack. Hilason lists both.
