Frequently Asked Questions
What is sweet iron and why does it help with bit training?
Sweet iron naturally oxidizes to develop a sweet taste that encourages salivation and soft mouth acceptance. This taste preference makes it especially valuable for training young horses learning to work with a bit. The salivation promotes relaxation and responsiveness during training sessions.
What is a cow gag bit used for?
A cow gag bit like this junior version is used for training and responsive horsemanship. It works well for flat work, hacking, responsive training, and jumping. The gag action combined with the chain mouthpiece provides balanced communication without severity, making it ideal for developing young horses.
Is this bit suitable for horses with large tongues?
Yes. The shaped mouthpiece is specifically designed to relieve tongue pressure on horses with large tongues or those exhibiting tongue evasion. This design reduces concentrated pressure and results in a softer, more responsive mouth and better listening during training.
What are the bit dimensions and what horses is it sized for?
The mouthpiece is 5 inches and the shank is 6.5 inches with a straight shank design. These proportions are specifically sized for junior horses and younger riders. The smaller dimensions suit horses with smaller mouth structures learning bit communication.
How do I maintain and clean this training bit?
The smooth surface and simple stainless steel construction make cleaning effortless. After riding or training, rinse with water and dry. The stainless steel hardware is anti-rust and durable, resisting corrosion from daily barn use and training sessions without special maintenance.
Is the chain mouthpiece painful for horses?
No. The chain mouthpiece design distributes pressure evenly across the nose, bars, corners of the mouth, curb, and poll, eliminating harsh pinching. This balanced pressure distribution promotes smoother transitions and reduces resistance during training, making communication clear without severity.
