Frequently Asked Questions
What is a curb chain and how does it work in western riding?
A curb chain is a leverage device that connects to the bit rings of a western bridle. When you apply pressure to the reins, the chain tightens on the horse's lower jaw, amplifying the cue signal. The single link design in this Hilason curb chain provides subtle, responsive communication across all western riding disciplines while maintaining control and responsiveness.
Is this Hilason curb chain made from real leather?
Yes, this curb chain is constructed from tan skirting leather, a top-quality full grain leather prized for its strength and suppleness. Skirting leather resists moisture and wear while maintaining flexibility through temperature changes and regular use, making it ideal for daily barn work and competition.
What bridle width does this 5/8-inch curb chain fit?
The 5/8-inch width is the industry standard for most western horse bridles. This curb chain features adjustable leather attachment points that accommodate typical bridle configurations. If you have a specialty narrow or wide bridle, measure the attachment loop diameter to confirm fit before purchase.
Can I use this curb chain for barrel racing and other western disciplines?
Yes, this single link curb chain works across reining, cutting, western pleasure, barrel racing, ranch work, and general western riding. The responsive single link design is versatile for various riding styles and horse temperaments, making it suitable for most western disciplines.
How do I care for and maintain skirting leather tack?
Wipe the leather regularly with a dry cloth after use to remove sweat and dirt. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Clean periodically with saddle soap and condition with leather conditioner 2-3 times per year. Avoid soaking in water, which can damage the leather over time.
Why choose Hilason curb chains over other brands?
Hilason delivers professional-grade equestrian tack with proven durability and responsiveness at economical pricing. Trusted by working riders and competitors, Hilason curb chains are competition-tested, barn-approved, and built for daily use without the premium price tag.
