Frequently Asked Questions

What does treeless saddle design mean and is it right for my horse?

A treeless saddle eliminates the rigid wooden or synthetic tree found in traditional western saddles. Instead, it uses flexible panels that adapt to your horse's back shape. This design provides 4-way movement, reduces pressure points, and accommodates difficult-to-fit horses with high withers, wide shoulders, or unusual conformation. Treeless saddles work well for trail riding, barrel racing, and pleasure riding when you want maximum flexibility and comfort.

What is the 4-way flex movement in this treeless saddle?

The 4-way flex movement refers to the saddle's ability to flex forward, backward, and side-to-side, plus vertically conform to your horse's back shape. This allows the saddle to move with your horse's natural motion, shoulder rotation, and back engagement during riding. Unlike rigid-tree saddles that restrict movement, the flexible design promotes natural gait expression and reduces muscle restriction.

What horse gullet size does this saddle fit?

This Hilason treeless saddle accommodates 6-8 inch gullet horses. The gullet is the curved channel under the saddle that fits over your horse's withers. A proper fit minimizes pressure points and ensures rider security. If you are unsure of your horse's gullet size, consult an experienced saddle fitter or measure the width of your horse's withers area.

Is this saddle handmade and what material is used?

Yes, each saddle is handcrafted one at a time by skilled leather workers. The saddle is made from top-quality full grain harness leather with an oil-tanned finish, hand-tooled with intricate carved details. The oiled leather develops a rich patina over time and is durable enough for daily barn use, trail riding, and competitive barrel racing without requiring premium pricing.

Can I use this treeless saddle for barrel racing and trail riding?

Yes. The Hilason treeless saddle is versatile and suitable for barrel racing, trail riding, western pleasure, and endurance work. The flexible design and comfortable seat make it ideal for multiple disciplines. Always ensure proper saddle fit to your horse's gullet size (6-8 inches in this case) for safety and comfort during any riding activity.

What is included with this saddle and what is the weight?

The saddle includes a matching front cinch strap, anti-slip stirrups, and is ready to ride. The approximate weight is 21 lbs, which is significantly lighter than traditional rigid-tree western saddles. The lighter weight reduces fatigue during long rides while maintaining structural integrity through hand-stitched seams and quality harness leather construction.
